Convivium Music of Lincoln began in 2001 primarily to commission a piece of music which celebrated the
21st anniversary of the duo partnership of Nicholas Daniel, oboe, and Julius Drake, piano.

The few enthusiasts who promoted that concert resolved to continue as an organisation which aims

• to bring contemporary music to new and existing audiences in Lincolnshire through the commissioning and performance of new works from inspiring composers, and through imaginative education programmes for all ages.

and has as its objectives:

• to establish a new strand of music promotion in Lincolnshire to include World Premières of new works
• to encourage further performances
• to bring inspirational performers and composers with international reputations
• to make contemporary music more accessible to a wider audience of all ages
• to enable local participation
• to encourage collaboration with local musicians
• to promote fruitful engagement with audiences
• to arrange education programmes

In doing so Convivium Music wishes to show the significance of the composer in the community, and demystify the process of commissioning. The Convivium Music strapline is “Cultivating New Music in Lincolnshire” and we are sowing the musical seeds for future generations.

We think we are unique in Britain in being an organisation established primarily for the commissioning of music.

In developing our aims, Convivium Music has ventured into the following activities:

  • Talking about Music at Pimento. This is run like a book club, selecting a piece of music for each monthly meeting and discussing it informally in a convivial atmosphere
  • Creating partnerships with other art forms such as poetry and photography
  • Inviting individuals and the business community to subscribe to commissions

In Roman times the Convivium was the sharing of a feast of good wine and food from the specific meaning of living together (con + vivo).

Convivium Music offers a feast of music and invites you to share it.
